Product of the Day, Day 21: Pentax K-7 Digital SLR

Pentax K-7 Digital SLR
Today’s Product of the Day was just announced yesterday! It’s the lovely new Pentax K-7 digital SLR camera. It makes many meaningful improvements on the already excellent Pentax K20D camera and is better in every way, putting it at or near the top of the class in most every respect. This camera is going to attract a LOT of attention from lovers of photography not just because of what it offers, but because of the fine lenses that can be put on it. Pentax makes some fixed focal length lenses that have no equivalent from any other manufacturer, and these lenses are some of the finest made, best performing lenses you can buy… which means great images and long term value.
What makes the K-7 such a huge leap over the K-20D?
- Magnesium alloy body provides a rugged, solid feel unmatched in its class
- Weather, dust and cold resistant
- Compact but holdable size, noticeably smaller than direct competitors from Canon and Nikon
- Redesigned 14.6 megapixel sensor and image processing engine for noticeably better images
- 5.2 frame per second shooting speed
- High definition video recording: 720p at 30 fps
- HDMI port for video and picture playback on HDTVs
- Improved dust removal system (looks to be analogous to Olympus’, which is by far the best on the market.)
- Improved shake reduction system, adds rotational compensation to vertical and horizontal
This is just a short list of the improvements made over the K20D, see Pentax’s K-7 page for the whole story. Taken individually they may not seem much, but taken together they add up to be what could easily be the finest camera in its class. I can’t wait to see what the images from the K-7 look like, but I am likely to be blown away. My K20D does a great job already and the prospect of an improved sensor and processing engine
I’ve used Pentax cameras (starting with a 645 medium format film camera) for many years and love their great lenses, beautiful color rendition, and extremely friendly operation. (See Pentax color here.) Pentax’s Limited series of fixed focal length lenses are some of the finest you can buy and offer noticeable improvements over zoom lenses, and are much lighter and more compact than zooms. A K-7 and a couple of Limited lenses gets you a very compact outfit that is likely to provide imaging quality second to none. All this and it is an HD camcorder, too!
The Pentax K-7 lists for $1,299 and I want one!
