Watchmen Movie in 2009

The groundbreaking limited series comic The Watchmen is under production as a motion picture and will be released in March 2009. I was kind of surprised this had slipped under my radar. I followed the comic when it originally ran in 1986-1987 and it looks like the film version will be a sight to behold. I’m glad they waited until the era of CGI to do it right.

Watchmen is an alternate reality where the US won the Vietman war, Richard Nixon never left office and in a world of superheroes (mostly outlawed), only one has super-powers… but he is godlike in his aloofness and sheer power. (He beat the Viet Cong singlehandedly.) The world is inching towards nuclear annihilation as the outlawed heroes find themselves and their roles in the world as their stories are told. The characters, stories and imagery are complex and multi-layered and I couldn’t even begin to go into them here.

You can see some images from the film (and they look dynamite) at http://watchmenmovie.warnerbros.com and read up on the series at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watchmen. If this interests you your best bet is to get the trade paperback and read it… you won’t be disappointed, and if you read it before you see the movie you will get a lot more out of it.

If they do this film right, it is sure to be a sensation!
