Product of the Day, Day 24: Sanyo eneloop Rechargeable Batteries
Sanyo eneloop Pre-Charged Rechargeable NiMH Battery
Rechargeable Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH) batteries are pretty much a must for digital cameras requiring AA batteries. Alkalines do not last longer than a few shots due to the deep current draw of modern digital devices, but NiMH batteries are well-suited for deep-draw devices. The downside is that NiMH rechargeables don’t hold a charge for long. Anyone who has owned and used them NiMH batteries has picked up a camera with batteries that seem like they were charged yesterday, but somehow are almost dead and need charged again. If you want a great NiMH battery that doesn’t go flat in a month, check out Sanyo’s eneloop batteries.

Eneloop batteries come pre-charged in the package and can be used the moment you buy them. They use special technology that enables them to hold an effective charge for almost a year! I still recommend you charge them every few months if you are not using them, but it is a lot less likely that you will pick up your camera or flash unit and find your batteries pooping out after just a few shots. They really are the premium choice and their extra reliability makes them worth the small price premium over ordinary NiMH batteries.
Speaking of which, eneloops can be a little hard to find and they require a special eneloop charger, so you can’t just purchase 4 of them and plug them into your old NiMH charger. Order a starter set with eneloop batteries + eneloop charger and add extra batteries as necessary. If you use a lot of AA batteries in digital equipment, these are the way to go.
