Blu-ray Disc Review By Jerry Rutledge

A renegade elven prince (Luke Goss) returns from self-imposed exile to an enchanted underground kingdom of elves, trolls and fairies to steal his father’s crown so he can lead an indestructible Golden Army of mechanical warriors to destroy all of mankind. Built ages ago by goblins, the Golden Army was magically hidden and locked away because they were too terrible and efficient killing machines. The prince is opposed by his twin sister (Anna Walton) who barely escapes from the underground kingdom with her life and the key to the location of the Army. This high definition Blu-ray Disc allows you to view every eye-popping fantasy scene of this movie in the crisp, colorful detail it deserves while immersed in flawless sound from the DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack.

“Hellboy 2: The Golden Army,” is directed, produced and co-written by Guillermo del Toro and Mike Mignola. It is a sequel to Mr. del Toro’s 2004 supernatural action thriller bearing the hero’s same name. In the first film, Hellboy is rescued as an infant and raised by his professor father. As an adult he joins the Bureau of Paranormal Research & Defense, a secret society, which battles supernatural threats to the Earth.

The characters we know and love from the original Hellboy are back. Ron Perlman reprises his role as the red devil Hellboy, a gruff, battle ready, cigar smoking, sergeant-at-arms that battles feisty other worldly creature that cross his path.  Also back is Liz Sherman, played by actress Selma Blair, his pyrokinetic love interest.Reprising his role as Hellboy’s best friend is the sensitive blue fishman-out-of-water and mind reader, Abe Sapien (Doug Jones). The new addition to the team is Dr. Johann Kraus (Seth MacFarlane), a ghost who is able to use his ectoplasmic essense to temporarily animate the dead or move machinery.  Hellboy’s exasperated boss Tom Manning (Jeffrey Tambor) tries to keep the team a secret at the Bureau lest their appearance upset the normal population.

Soon the team has befriended the elven princess and the chase is on to prevent the elven prince from finding and unlocking the secrets of the Golden Army.

The disc includes deleted scenes and is also full of special extras including a concept art gallery, del Torro’s notebook of his sketches and notes for the movie, a chance to take behind-the-scenes tours through the movie’s sets of the underground kingdom and a documentary on the making of Hellboy II. An additional feature is available if you have an internet connection that will allow you to chat with others online, share movie clips, download additional bonus content and build your own Hellboy comic book. In addition this Blu-ray comes with software to transfer the movie to your iPod, Mac of PC to view it on the go.  Universal’s U-Control feature allows you to explore the film in-depth as you watch, which gives this disc great replay value.

If you love fantasy, action, the supernatural, or any combination of the three wrapped up in a fun, visually stunning package, Hellboy 2: The Golden Army is a must-have.
