Olympus E-PL1 Micro Four-Thirds interchangeable lens camera with 17mm lens (zoom lens also available in $399 kit)

Tell A Friend!

I have written about digital photography a good bit recently, which is natural with summer here and lots of people going to weddings, going on vacation, etc.  Many readers are sending questions about cameras and photography.

Ever since they became available I have been a fan of interchangeable lens compact cameras in general, and the PEN Micro Four-Thirds cameras from Olympus in particular.  I bought an Olympus PEN E-P1 as soon as I could get my hands on one and now have an extensive system comprising several bodies and lenses.  The results never fail to satisfy, thanks to Olympus’ excellent optics and jpeg processing.  What’s more, they are really fun to use.  A point-and-shoot digital camera often feels like a toy, a digital SLR, too professional and serious at times.  Using my PEN cameras reminds me of using a classic rangefinder, like a Leica.  It’s just the right combo of size, functionality and pro-grade image quality and I find them ideal for travel. I use my Pentax digital SLRs every day but when I am taking a trip on an airplane the PEN is usually the first to go in my bag.

If you are looking to get into an interchangeable lens camera or just want a small camera that creates outstanding images, you are in luck.  The Olympus E-PL1 with zoom lens is on sale for $399 this week, a healthy drop from its $599 introductory price and the $499 it normally sells for. Whether looking for a main camera, a companion to your digital SLR outfit, or a big jump up from the picture quality you get with a compact, at only $399 it practically rates as an impulse purchase.
